WJ demonstrated exceptional thinking through innovation at their equipment manufacturing depot in Elland, West Yorkshire recently. Led by their truck design and build engineering team they highlighted substantial technical abilities, a forward thinking ethos and their resulting developments to many highway practitioners from across the industry.
The regional event was attended by around 150 delegates and supported by the Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE) with a programme of CPD endorsed technical presentations followed by practical demonstrations providing a real understanding of WJ’s ambition to find better ways to do things.
Richard Stuart Project Director Costain said “The thing that came through to me was the culture in the organisation. There’s a real drive towards making things better”
Safety and sustainability proved to be at the heart of all WJ do with cutting-edge personal protective equipment (PPE) providing enhanced protection for their workforce, innovative materials development in collaboration with the Open University and ‘solid works’ designed trucks for effective delivery, low emissions and advanced safety features.
Wayne Johnston WJ Group Managing Director said “It’s important to show what we are doing but the objective for me is to get feedback and direction from our clients as much as it is to showcase our thinking and latest innovations”
Guest speaker Andrew Martin Head of Highways Dorset County Council provided the clients view and reminded us of the challenges ahead with sustained pressure on local authority maintenance budgets and the urgent need for cost effective solutions, whilst Mark Holmes Commercial Manager Pera Technology had everyone focussed on the future of road marking with hi-tech technology transfer from other industries.
Some may have perceived road marking to be ‘easy’ so delegates were given the chance to try and mark out the ‘S’ in Slow, using mineral sand for safety, with some interesting outcomes. Surprised winner of the road marking challenge was Tom Barnes National Sales Manager of 3M Traffic Safety Systems and he is to be congratulated.
Trafficlear telemetry technology, Volvo Cross Road Trucks and innovative safety clothing providers Viz Refelectives were among the suppliers demonstrating their supporting innovations in the depot.
Exceptional thinking and an innovative culture is exactly why WJ are a leading provider of award winning products and services within the road marking industry.
