High Friction Surfacing

We are the UK’s leading contractor providing an extensive range of high friction surfacing systems to improve the safety of your roads.

  • 57% reduction in wet weather accidents
  • 5% reduction in the overall number of accidents
  • £24m value in prevention per year across UK / 1:8 Return on Investment – Prevention Value

If you are looking to improve skid resistance on critical locations, reduce braking distances and prevent accidents, high friction surfacing is a sustainable, cost-effective solution to improve the safety of your road networks.

High Friction Surfacing originated in London in the 1960s to tackle high rates of skid collisions. The aggregate used across the road surface has unique properties with its high polished stone value (PSV) and extreme hardness. Both factors result in a system that is highly resistant to wear and polishing from ongoing traffic.

We understand that your needs will differ depending on the type of road network you’re concerned with, whether it’s a heavily trafficked motorway or outside a school. We have a range of technologies and application methods that will satisfy your requirements regardless of current road conditions or performance. We are driven by a need to ensure your networks are as safe as possible.

Certifications and Capabilities

We are certified by the British Board of Agreement (BBA) to install all five HAPAS approved Type 1 HFS systems from across the industry. The only contractor in the UK to be able to offer this complete portfolio. This unique position allows us to select from a full range of technologies, the most appropriate solution that satisfies your budget, performance, weather, and local site conditions.

Application & Installation

National teams ready to support you

  • Our national team of over 20 specialist High Friction Surfacing vehicles, is reliable and experienced in providing a range of systems to suit any circumstances. We will collaborate with you to understand more about you project: what type of road it is and where, and whether there are any immediate safety concerns. Together, we can guarantee road users a safer journey.

Application & Installation

Hot applied systems employ a resin binder and a graded blend of calcined bauxite and finer aggregates that are pre-mixed as part of the manufacturing process. When heated in specialist equipment on site it becomes molten, this is then applied by skilled operatives using the screed method and will harden upon cooling.

Cold applied systems comprise two or more chemical components including at least one liquid. The components are mixed and once blended, a cure or hardening process is activated. This process called ‘binder curing’ adheres to the aggregate and bonds the system to the surface. Once complete, the excess aggregate can be swept off and is available for re-use.

RapidGrip, is a cold-applied coloured surfacing system which enhances delivery efficiency through its spray application, elevating skid resistance. Its adaptability allows RapidGrip to be suitable for places of relative safety (PRS), parking bays, and pedestrian zones. This novel solution delivers double the requisite texture depth for PRS bays and provides a skid resistance value of 65 SRV. With a swift application rate of 37m in 30 minutes, RapidGrip minimises traffic management necessities during its installation.

WeatherGrip Type 1 is a proprietary high friction surfacing system with a service life of five to 10 years. Suitable for demarcation on roads, active travel routes or pedestrian walkways.

Coloured Surfacing

An effective demarcation system to improve visibility and safety. Coloured surfacing is an effective surface treatment solution that improves visibility and safety across road networks. This is an overlay treatment that will contrast with standard surface material to provide a cost-effective demarcation and traffic calming solution.

Used in combination with other road markings, coloured surfacing will influence driver behaviour in areas with a higher safety concern. For instance, on active travel routes, approaches to roundabouts or outside schools.

Applications & Benefits

Coloured surfacing was adapted from high friction surfacing in the 1990s due to an increase in road collisions. Now, coloured surfacing is used across a variety of applications in highway and off-highway industries. This includes road narrowing demarcation, car parks, industrial walkways, and pedestrian crossings.

One of the core benefits of coloured surfacing is its durability and ability to withstand high volumes of traffic. Simple to apply by hand or spray, it is an adaptable system that will also improve the texture of surfaces and when required, provide reflectivity for certain areas at night.

WeatherGrip

WeatherGrip is our cold applied coloured surfacing system. Ideal for creating new demarcations and restoring current surfaces where colour has faded.

WeatherGrip is skid and slip resistant and can be uniquely adapted to deliver specific performance characteristics aligned to your project. Highly durable under vehicular or pedestrian traffic, WeatherGrip is suitable in areas subjected to high stress through braking forces.

We’re able to install WeatherGrip as reflective or non-reflective, depending on your requirements.  The system is also simple and easy to apply. With a fast cure time even in low temperatures, treated areas are typically open for use within one hour
